About Wesley Woodyard

From growing up playing backyard games with his family to Friday night lights with his high school team, it was clear that Woodyard had a rare combination of talent and heart. Those traits that would eventually define his career from a small Southern town to a long and respected NFL career.
At LaGrange High School, Woodyard emerged as a standout athlete, earning All-State honors and leading his team to a 51-3 record and two state championships. He was named the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s AAA Georgia Defensive Player of the Year his senior season. His high football knowledge and ability to rally teammates around him caught the attention of college programs across the country. Ultimately, it was the University of Kentucky that offered him the chance to continue his football career and he made the most of it.
At Kentucky, Woodyard quickly became a cornerstone of the Wildcats’ defense. A four-year letterman and two-time team captain, he led the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons and twice earned First-Team All-SEC honors. Known for his speed, toughness, and vocal leadership, Woodyard played a key role in transforming the culture of Kentucky football during his time in Lexington. He graduated with a degree in Communications.
Despite going undrafted in 2008, Woodyard’s drive and production couldn’t be ignored. He signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent and immediately made an impact, both on defense and special teams. Over the next six seasons in Denver, he carved out a vital role as a dependable linebacker and team leader, earning a reputation as one of the most consistent and respected voices in the locker room. He was named a team captain five times and played in Super Bowl XLVIII.
In 2014, Woodyard signed with the Tennessee Titans, where his leadership and experience continued to shine. He became the heart of the Titans’ defense, delivering some of the best seasons of his career in Nashville. In 2017, at age 31, he recorded a career-high 124 tackles, proving he was still playing at an elite level well over a decade into the league. Woodyard remained a steady presence on and off the field until his retirement following the 2019 season.
Beyond his contributions between the lines, Woodyard’s legacy is perhaps most deeply felt in the community. He founded the 16Ways Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through mentorship, education, and wellness initiatives. He was a frequent presence in local schools and hospitals, earning widespread respect for his consistent commitment to service.
Wesley Woodyard and his wife, Veronica, share the joy of raising four children together. Though his days in the NFL are behind him, life hasn’t slowed down one bit. Cheering from the sidelines, Woodyard remains deeply involved in his family’s lives, supporting each of their dreams with the same passion and commitment he once brought to the field.
