About Stephen Wright

Stephen Wright quietly carved out a steady NFL career as a dependable offensive tackle, known for his resilience, consistency, and championship pedigree.
A product of Louisville’s duPont Manual High School, where he was a key part of the Crimson’s 1959 state championship team, Wright signed to play for the University of Alabama, Wright was a key part of the Crimson Tide’s dominant teams under legendary coach Bear Bryant. His size and understanding of the game helped protect Alabama’s backfield and contributed to their success during one of the program’s golden eras.
Selected in the 1964 NFL Draft, Wright began his professional career with the Green Bay Packers. Though not always in the spotlight, he made an immediate impact in the trenches, earning the respect of coaches and teammates alike with his toughness and work ethic. He played an integral role on the Packers’ offensive line during the team’s iconic championship years, helping them win three NFL Championships and both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II under coach Vince Lombardi.
Wright went on to play for multiple teams, including the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, over his nine-year NFL career. He appeared in 101 games, starting 43 of them, and recovered five fumbles. Proof to his awareness and physical presence on the line. His contributions were essential to the run and pass protection schemes of every team he joined, even though linemen rarely received public recognition at the time.
While with the Giants he was the “model” for a sculpture created for the NFL Man of the Year award. The artwork is a standing lineman with a cape draped across his shoulders.
After retiring from football in 1972, Wright stepped away from the spotlight, but his legacy remains in the success of the teams he helped anchor and the championship rings he earned. Though not as widely known as some of his teammates, Wright’s role as a quiet force in the trenches highlights the importance of linemen in building great teams.
Stephen Wright was a high school legend, college standout, three-time NFL Champion, and two-time Super Bowl champion. His career serves as a reminder that greatness often lies in the foundation.
