About Sam Madison

From the live oaks and red clay of South Georgia and the Florida Panhandle emerged Sam Madison, a gifted athlete who would go on to become one of the premier cornerbacks of his era in the National Football League.

Born in Thomasville, Georgia, and raised nearby in Monticello, Florida, Madison excelled athletically at Florida A&M University Developmental Research School in Tallahassee. A standout in football, basketball, baseball, and track, he ultimately chose football and accepted a scholarship to the University of Louisville.

At Louisville, Madison developed into one of the most accomplished defensive backs in program history. A three-year starter for the Cardinals, he recorded 201 tackles, 16 interceptions, 44 pass breakups, five fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles during his collegiate career. His outstanding play earned All-America honors as both a junior and senior, and his legacy remains recognized in the University of Louisville Ring of Honor.

His standout collegiate career led to his selection by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft with the 44th overall pick. Playing under head coach Jimmy Johnson and later Nick Saban, Madison quickly became a cornerstone of Miami’s defense during one of the franchise’s most successful stretches of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Alongside fellow cornerback Patrick Surtain, he formed one of the NFL’s most respected secondary tandems. Madison earned four consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1999 through 2002 and was named a First-Team All-Pro in both 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons with the Dolphins, he recorded 31 interceptions and helped anchor defenses that consistently ranked among the league’s best in yards allowed.

After the 2005 season, Madison joined the New York Giants, bringing veteran leadership and playoff experience to a talented roster. His career reached its pinnacle during the 2007 season when the Giants captured Super Bowl XLII, defeating the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.

Madison finished his NFL career after 12 seasons, appearing in 184 games and recording 38 interceptions, 595 interception return yards, and two defensive
touchdowns. Widely regarded as one of the finest cornerbacks in Miami Dolphins history, his combination of skills, athleticism, and durability earned him induction into the Miami Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2014.

Following his playing career, Madison successfully transitioned into coaching, adding a Super Bowl championship ring as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. In 2022, he returned to the Miami Dolphins as the team’s cornerbacks coach. In January 2026, Madison came full circle, returning to his roots in the Florida Panhandle when he joined the coaching staff at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
