About Mark Pike
Mark Pike earned a reputation as one of the toughest and most respected special teams players of his era in the NFL.
Born in Elizabethtown and raised in northern Kentucky, Pike starred at Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood before continuing his football career at Georgia Tech.
He developed into a standout defensive player for the Yellow Jackets whose size, athleticism and relentless style of play attracted the attention of NFL scouts.
The Buffalo Bills selected Pike in the seventh round of the 1986 NFL Draft, and he went on to spend his entire 13-year career in Buffalo, appearing in 193 games - the sixth- highest total in franchise history. Although he played linebacker and defensive end, Pike became best known for his outstanding special teams play during one of the most successful periods in Bills’ history, as Buffalo advanced to four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990 to 1993.
Teammates and coaches frequently described Pike as the physical cornerstone of Buffalo’s special teams because of his rare combination of size, speed, and toughness. He was also known for his leadership and character on and off the field.
By the end of his career with the Bills, Pike had become the franchise’s all-time leader in special teams tackles with 289, an accomplishment that still stands among the best in NFL history.
Mark Pike battled non-Hodgkin lymphoma privately for years before passing away in December 2021 at the age of 57. His legacy remains tied not only to his football accomplishments, but also to the toughness and dedication that defined his life and career.
