About Mark Clayton

Mark Clayton became an elite wide receiver and game-changing playmaker in the NFL, rising from humble beginnings to become one of the most dangerous weapons of the 1980s Miami Dolphins offense.
A standout athlete at the University of Louisville, Clayton developed into a dynamic deep-threat receiver known for his speed, precise route-running, and ability to make explosive plays after the catch. Despite being selected in the 8th round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, Clayton defied expectations and quickly became a cornerstone of one of the league’s most prolific passing offenses.
Teaming up with Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, Clayton helped revolutionize the Dolphins’ aerial attack. In 1984, he had a breakout season with 73 receptions, 1,389 yards, and a then-NFL record 18 touchdown catches, leading the league and helping the Dolphins reach Super Bowl XIX. Clayton’s performance that year earned him Pro Bowl honors and marked the beginning of a remarkable stretch as one half of the famed “Marks Brothers” duo alongside fellow receiver Mark Duper.
Clayton’s career with Miami spanned 10 seasons (1983–1992), during which he earned five Pro Bowl selections, recorded five 1,000-yard seasons, and became the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions at the time of his retirement. He later played one final season with the Green Bay Packers in 1993 before retiring from professional football.
Clayton finished his NFL career with 582 receptions for 8,974 yards and 84 touchdowns in 157 regular-season games, along with 10 playoff appearances. Known for his clutch performances and ability to stretch the field, he left a lasting legacy as one of the most productive and exciting receivers of his era.
Following his playing days, Clayton transitioned into a successful post-football life. He has remained involved in the game through mentoring young athletes and participating in alumni events, while also focusing on business ventures and charitable causes. Clayton has been a passionate advocate for youth development, using his platform to encourage education, discipline, and perseverance.
He has also been a frequent presence in Miami Dolphins community outreach efforts and was inducted into the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll in recognition of his contributions to the franchise.
Mark Clayton’s journey from a late-round draft pick to an NFL star and respected community leader highlights his resilience, work ethic, and passion for the game. His legacy continues to inspire the next generation of athletes both on and off the field.
