Frank Minnifield

Frank Minnifield overcame numerous challenges to become one of the NFL’s top defensive backs during his nine-year career with the Cleveland Browns.

Despite being overlooked due to his size at every stage of his football journey, he proved doubters wrong with his aggressive playing style, leadership, and relentless determination. A four-time Pro Bowler (1986-1989) and first team All-Pro (1988), Minnifield was named to the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team, cementing his legacy with the NFL and the Browns. He was a key part of the Browns’ success in the late 1980s, helping lead the team to three AFC Championship Game appearances over a span of four seasons.

Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Minnifield attended Henry Clay High School. Despite his talent, he received no scholarship offers out of high school because scouts considered him “too small” to play college football. Determined to prove himself, he walked on at the University of Louisville, where he quickly made an impact with his speed and playmaking ability.

Minnifield excelled on special teams, leading the nation in kickoff return yardage during his junior year. His dynamic ability as a returner and defensive back helped him earn recognition as one of the top players in Louisville football history.

Despite his college success, Minnifield went undrafted by the NFL because scouts deemed him “too short” to play defensive back at the professional level. Undeterred, he began his pro career in the start-up United States Football League (USFL), playing for the Chicago Blitz and later the Arizona Wranglers. In the USFL, he played under legendary Super Bowl-winning coach George Allen, who recognized Minnifield’s potential and helped refine his game at the professional level.

His impressive performances in the USFL caught the attention of NFL teams, leading to his signing with the Cleveland Browns in 1984. Minnifield quickly became one of the league’s elite cornerbacks, forming a formidable duo with fellow defensive back Hanford Dixon. The two are credited with popularizing the term “Dawg Pound” referring to the Browns’ passionate east end zone fans. Minnifield was known for his physical, lockdown coverage and ability to shut down opposing receivers.

After retiring from the NFL, Minnifield transitioned into the business world, where he achieved great success. He founded Minnifield Enterprizes, Inc., which is one of the top purchasing agents for Toyota manufacturing plants throughout North America. His leadership and business acumen positioned him as a respected figure in the corporate sector.

Minnifield also made history as the first African American elected to the board of directors for Commerce Lexington, a prominent economic development organization in Lexington. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees and has been a board member of Community Trust Bank for more than two decades.

Minnifield’s journey from an overlooked high school player to an NFL star and successful businessman is a testament to his perseverance, hard work, and determination.
