About Eric Wood

Eric Wood is a testament of consistency and hard work in becoming one of the NFL’s most dependable and respected offensive linemen during his career.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wood attended Elder High School, where he stood out for his toughness and leadership. Despite his talent, he received little attention from major college programs—some scouts doubted whether he had the ideal size for the next level. Ultimately, he received just one scholarship offer, from the University of Louisville.

Determined to prove his doubters wrong, Wood quickly made his mark with the Cardinals. He earned First Team Freshman All-American honors, followed by a Second Team All-Big East selection as a sophomore, and First Team All-Big East honors in both his junior and senior seasons. His command of the offensive line and reliable snapping and blocking earned the respect of coaches, teammates, and opponents alike.

Wood’s college success paved the way to the NFL, where he was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He stepped in as the starting center from day one and spent his entire career in Buffalo. Over the years, he developed a reputation as a tough, smart, and technically sound lineman. A respected leader on and off the field, Wood anchored the offensive line during some of the team’s most competitive seasons in the 2010s.

One of the high points of his career came in 2015, when he was named to the Pro Bowl, a testament to his outstanding play and steady presence at the heart of the Bills’ offense. Wood’s ability to stay healthy and deliver consistent performances made him one of the most reliable centers of his time. Unfortunately, an on-field spinal injury ended his career prematurely in 2018.

After retiring from the NFL, Eric Wood successfully transitioned into broadcasting, becoming a color analyst for the Buffalo Bills Radio Network and an influential voice in football media. He also contributed as a sports columnist for The Athletic and has called games for FOX, ESPN, the ACC Network, and CBS.

Known for his selflessness and dedication beyond the field, Eric has consistently given back to the sport, his community, and those in need. In recognition of his service, he was twice nominated for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. In 2014, he established the Eric Wood Foundation, which later evolved into the Evan Wood Fund—named in honor of his late brother, Evan, who passed away from complications related to cerebral palsy. The fund provides chronically ill children and their families with critical care, support, resources, and encouragement.

Eric Wood’s journey from overlooked recruit to NFL cornerstone is a powerful testament to his resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His legacy—as both a player and a mentor—continues to inspire the next generation.
