About Derrick Ramsey

Derrick Ramsey became an elite athlete and leader in the NFL as a transformed quarterback to tight end.
A dynamic quarterback and tight end, Ramsey was a key player for the University of Kentucky Wildcats, leading the team to a share of the 1976 SEC Championship. He made history as the first Black starting quarterback for UK, proving himself as a leader and playmaker. His performance earned him All-SEC honors and cemented his place as one of the greatest athletes in Kentucky football history.
Despite excelling as a quarterback in college, Ramsey transitioned to tight end in the NFL, where his size, athleticism, and football intelligence made him a valuable asset. Selected by the Oakland Raiders in the 5th round of the 1978 NFL Draft, he quickly adapted to his new position and became a key contributor. His blocking ability and reliable hands helped the Raiders’ offense thrive, and in the 1980 season, he played an essential role in the team’s run to victory in Super Bowl XV, securing a championship ring.
Ramsey continued to develop as a dependable tight end, spending six seasons with the Raiders before joining the New England Patriots in 1984. With the Patriots, he played an instrumental role in their offensive schemes, providing veteran leadership and contributing as both a blocker and receiver. He finished his career with the Detroit Lions in 1987, wrapping up a successful nine-year tenure in the league.
Following his football career, Ramsey transitioned into public service and business, using his leadership skills to make a lasting impact. He served as Kentucky’s Secretary of Education and Workforce Development under two governors, working to improve opportunities for students and job seekers. Ramsey also played a crucial role in advancing workforce training programs and promoting economic growth across the state.
In addition to his public service, Ramsey has been a successful businessman, author, and mentor, advocating for student-athletes and young professionals. His book, They Call Me Mr. Secretary: Through the Lens of a Winner, reflects on his powerful journey, sharing insights on leadership, perseverance, and personal growth. His transformation from a groundbreaking quarterback to an NFL champion and influential leader stands as a testament to versatility, adaptability, and commitment to excellence.
