About Bruce McNorton

Bruce McNorton was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, and attended Seabreeze High School, where he stood out as a multi-sport athlete. He went on to play college football at Georgetown College in Kentucky, excelling as a defensive back and return specialist.
During his time at Georgetown, McNorton made a significant impact on the field. He recorded 17 career interceptions and earned Little All-American honors, while also setting school records in kick return average and return touchdowns. His athleticism and instincts drew the attention of NFL scouts despite playing at an NAIA program and he was selected in the 4th round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
McNorton quickly established himself as a dependable starter in the Lions’ secondary. His breakout season came in 1983, when he recorded seven interceptions to help lead Detroit to an NFC Central Division title. Known for his consistency and football intelligence, he played in 116 games, starting 92 of them, over nine seasons in the NFL. His career totals include 20 interceptions, over 500 tackles, 1.0 sack, and six fumble recoveries, demonstrating his all-around defensive skill.
In recognition of his perseverance and leadership, McNorton was awarded the Ed Block Courage Award in 1990. He later had a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins before retiring from professional football in 1991, ending a solid and impactful NFL career.
He worked as a high school football coach and guidance counselor before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers as a scout in 2000. For over two decades, he contributed to the success of one of the league’s premier franchises, helping to identify and evaluate talent until his retirement in 2022.
He now dedicates time to giving back to his hometown community through an annual youth football clinic in Daytona Beach. McNorton is married, a father, and has been honored by the Georgetown College Athletic Hall of Fame.
