About Frank LeMaster

Frank LeMaster proved throughout his career to be one of the most consistent and respected linebackers in the NFL during his nine-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, LeMaster attended Bryan Station High School. As a standout athlete, he earned a scholarship to his hometown school, the University of Kentucky, where he began his collegiate career as a running back before transitioning to linebacker. LeMaster excelled at linebacker and decided to fully commit to playing defense. He was a team captain for the Wildcats in 1974 and played in two collegiate all-star games.

Despite having a solid career at Kentucky, LeMaster entered the NFL as the 89th pick in the fourth-round in the 1974 NFL Draft. While not considered a top prospect, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to take a chance on him, and he ended up spending the rest of his professional career in Philadelphia.

LeMaster gave 110 percent in his NFL career, showing toughness, work ethic, and football intelligence. A Pro Bowl selection in 1981, LeMaster was a key defensive leader on the Eagles’ elite defenses of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He played a critical role in helping the team reach Super Bowl XV, marking one of the franchise’s most memorable eras under coach Dick Vermeil.

LeMaster was a durable and dependable presence, starting 115 consecutive games from 1975 to 1982. His physical style of play, combined with a strong understanding of defensive schemes, made him a cornerstone of the Eagles’ defense. In 1981, his standout play earned him a Pro Bowl selection, making him one of the top linebackers in the league. One of the highlights of Frank LeMasters career came in 1975 when he returned an interception for 89 yard touchdown against Washington and legendary quarterback Joe Theismann. That 89 yard interception touchdown was the longest in the NFL for the 1975 season.

He played alongside other defensive stalwarts such as Bill Bergey and Herm Edwards, and his leadership was instrumental in guiding the Eagles to multiple playoff appearances, including their run to the NFC Championship and subsequent Super Bowl berth in the 1980 season.

After retiring from the NFL following the 1982 season, LeMaster transitioned into the business world, joining FieldTurf in 2001 and served as the vice president of sales. He remained active in community and charitable work, particularly in the Philadelphia and Lexington areas.

Frank LeMaster passed away on March 23, 2023 at the age of 71.
