About Lee Calland

Lee Calland became an elite NFL athlete known for his consistency and defensive prowess during a pivotal era in football history.
A standout defensive back, Calland played college football at the University of Louisville, where he developed into a fast, instinctive, and versatile player in the secondary. Despite limited exposure in a run-heavy era, his speed and tenacity caught the attention of NFL scouts. He went undrafted in 1963 but earned his opportunity through hard work and determination—traits that would define his decade-long career in professional football.
Calland made his NFL debut with the Minnesota Vikings, becoming the first rookie in NFL history to start his first game at cornerback. He quickly proved himself as a capable cornerback with strong coverage skills and dependable tackling. His performance helped solidify the Vikings’ defense in the mid-1960s, and he later became a key contributor on the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, and Pittsburgh Steelers, where he finished his NFL playing career in 1972. Known for his durability and football IQ, Calland played in 123 NFL games, starting in 51 of them and recording 9 career interceptions.
After retiring from playing, Calland dedicated himself to coaching and mentoring. He returned to the sidelines, helping shape young athletes at both the high school and at the HBCU collegiate level, coaching defenses at Fort Valley State, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and Tennessee State. His passion for football and commitment to giving back to the sport continued to influence generations of players, especially in underserved communities.
Calland’s journey from an undrafted player to a respected NFL veteran and coach stands as a powerful example of resilience, hard work, and lifelong dedication to the game. His legacy lives on not only through the teams he impacted on the field, but also in the lives of the young athletes he mentored and inspired off it.
