About Michael Mitchell

Mike Mitchell became a respected and hard-hitting presence in the NFL, known for his intensity and passion for the game.
Despite not being heavily recruited out of high school and flying under the radar of many national scouts, Mitchell signed to play college football at Ohio University, where he quickly made a name for himself. He emerged as one of the top defenders in the Mid-American Conference, finishing his college career with over 200 tackles and earning All-MAC honors.
Mitchell’s impressive performance and strong pro day numbers caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading to his selection in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He became the highest NFL draft pick out of Ohio University since 1936. Known for his fearsome hits and instinctive play, he became a valuable contributor on defense and special teams during his early years in the league.
After four seasons with the Raiders, Mitchell hit his stride as a starter and team leader with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2013 with Carolina, he posted one of his best statistical seasons. Recording 66 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 3.5 sacks, helping lead the Panthers to a 12-4 record and playoff appearance. He then signed with the Steelers, where he started for four consecutive seasons, bringing veteran leadership to the secondary and helping guide Pittsburgh to multiple postseason runs.
Over a ten-year NFL career, Mitchell played in 154 games, recording more than 500 total tackles, 11 interceptions, and 8 forced fumbles. He earned a reputation as one of the league’s most passionate and vocal safeties, known for firing up his teammates.
Since retiring from the league, Mitchell has remained involved in football, transitioning into coaching at the professional level. He served as an assistant secondary coach for the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons. In addition to coaching, he continues to mentor young athletes and advocate for player development. His journey from an overlooked college recruit to a respected NFL veteran and coach is a story of perseverance, grit, and a lifelong love for the game.
